Caption Competition #5 Winner

When she takes a break from caption writing, Shauna is tracking the weather.

Judge Jake agreed to pick the winner of Caption Competition #5. Thank you all for the excellent captions. As you know the first prize is an imported 51 gram Fry’s Turkish Delight bar. Because we received funds last week from monies allocated by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, we were able to purchase two more Turkish Delights to award as second and third place prizes. However, our Recovery fund expenditures did not create any new jobs.

Salt Lake valley from the air

The Salt Lake valley from the air, with the Draper temple in the foothills


On the flight from Fort Worth to Salt Lake City my wife gave me the window seat. I took a few photographs as we approached Salt Lake. If you look closely at the first photograph (click to enlarge) you can see the Draper temple in the center of the picture in the foothills. The second picture obviously is the Jordan River temple. The last photograph has a lot of familiar landmarks. The Utah State Capitol, the U on the mountain, the Church Office Building with the Salt Lake temple to the left.

20 Magnificent English Castle Photographs

I was born in England and lived there for 28 years. High on my list of places to see (and photograph) are castles. Yet I only visited two castles, and neither of those were in England. But the next best thing to being there is to see great photographs of English castles. Of course every castle is not pictured and even some famous ones may be missing.

Spring Break

This photograph was taken during Spring Break of March 2004. My son Paul is the one that appears to be holding up one gigantic rock. It will be interesting to read the captions you come up with because I can’t think of any right now.

The first prize (Kaysville and environs only) is a 51 gram Fry’s Turkish Delight bar. Turkish Delight is the addictive confection to which Edmund Pevensie succumbs in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. Sales of Turkish Delight rose following the theatrical release of the film version of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This is your chance to find out what Turkish Delight tastes like and if it is really addictive.

Rachel agreed to model the Turkish Delight. After eating one bar she wanted to also eat the bar that has been reserved for first prize. Perhaps these Turkish Delights are addictive after all. Well now, write a caption at your own risk.

The judging of this latest competition passes from Judge Jill to Judge Jake. I expect we will run the competition for two weeks. Even if you are not local we will still be delighted to hear from you. However, we cannot mail prizes because there is no money left in the budget. Turkish Delights don’t come cheap you know.

Ice Breakers sours

The first prize (Kaysville and environs only) is a 1.5oz tin of Hershey’s sugar free Ice Breakers sours. I’ve never had any but my son Jake says “that they are worth writing a caption for.”

Judge Jill donated the prize and she will be the sole decider of the winner. I have been relegated to just the production of this grand media event.

In a week, maybe two, I will post the winning caption. Even if you are not local we still like to hear from you. However, we cannot mail prizes. This is a low budget operation, really low budget.

I hope that doesn’t sour you on participation.

The first prize (Kaysville and environs only) was going to be a big bar of Hershey’s chocolate. But that got ate. Jill came up with a one pound bag of Stauffer’s Sweethearts Cookies as the prize. Just in time for Valentines Day.

Displaying the U.S. and Utah flags at the West Bountiful City Independence Parade

Last year I went with family to watch the West Bountiful City Independence Parade. The theme was Our Heritage Past and Present. There were 60 entries but it didn’t take very long for the parade to pass by. It was cold enough in the shade that my wife and brother-in-law moved out of the shade and into the sun. Last year I posted photographs but this year I will show you a sampling of the parade in video. The nine videos run an average of 12 seconds each.
